Setting units of measure

By default, the unit of measurement in SmartTurn for any item master is eaches. However, for any item master, you can assign one or more additional units of measure.

To set units of measure for standard, shipping, receiving, measurement, billing, or weight units:

  1. Select Operations>Item Masters.
  2. Double-click an item master to edit. Or, highlight the item master and select Edit icon Edit, in the toolbar above.
  3. Select the Units of Measure tab.
  4. Select Add item button Add UoM above the units of measure table. The Add UoM screen appears.
  5. Enter information about your unit of measure:
    1. For Name, enter the full name of the unit of measure, such as "case". You can select from the drop-down list, or type in your own name. Note that the Name is case sensitive, so "Cases" is treated as a different unit of measure than "cases". SmartTurn strongly advises against creating a unit of measure whose Name is different from the Name of another unit of measure only by capitalization.
    2. For Abbreviation, enter the abbreviation for the name, using no more than six characters, for example, "cs" for case. Note that the Abbreviation is case sensitive, so "CS" is treated as a different unit of measure than "cs". SmartTurn strongly advises against creating a unit of measure whose Abbreviation is different from the Abbreviation of another unit of measure only by capitalization.
    3. For # of Eaches, enter the quantity associated with that unit of measurement, relative to eaches. For example, if a case includes 12 eaches, you would enter "12".
    4. Collectively, the Length, Width, Height, Cube, Dim. Weight, Ti, Hi, and Number in Pallet fields are the measurements of this unit: they describe the physical attributes of this unit of measure. Enter the appropriate values.

The default values for these attributes are based on the values you entered for the Measurement Unit, and then scaled appropriately based on the difference in the # of Eaches in your Measurement Unit and the # of Eaches in this unit of measure.

      • If your item master is marked Based on Measurement Unit, your measurements must always be exactly proportional, so the measurements are not editable unless you are working with the Measurement Unit. For example, if your "each" has a Dim. Weight of 1 lb, and your "case" contains 10 eaches, then your case must have a Dim. Weight of 10 lb. (You can change the physical unit for these measurements using the drop-down, for example if you want eaches reported in ounces instead of pounds. But the actual physical dim. weight must be the same, so it is not editable.)
      • If your item master is not marked Based on Measurement Unit, your measurements default to being proportional, but the measurements are editable. For example, if your "each" has a Dim. Weight of 1 lb, and your "case" contains 10 eaches, perhaps your case has more packaging and weighs not 10 lb but 12 lb.
  6. Select OK to save your changes to the unit of measure.

Note: If your item master is marked Based on Measurement Unit, the measurements will automatically be updated when you select OK. For example, if you add a new unit of measure and change the # of Eaches from 1 to 2, the Dim. Weight will automatically be doubled when you select OK. You can also select Reset based on Measurement Unit to view the updated measurement values before you close the screen.

  7. Use the radio buttons to select when you want to use each unit of measure:
    • Standard Unit - This unit of measure is the default putaway unit for this item, and is displayed in reports about this item master.
    • Shipping Unit - This unit of measure is the default when shipping the item.
    • Receiving Unit - This unit of measure is the default when receiving the item.
    • Weight Unit - This unit of measure is deprecated and may be removed soon. SmartTurn recommends that you disregard this unit of measure. This unit was used in calculating the weight of a shipment.
    • Billing Unit - This unit of measure is the default when calculating the billing information for the item for all billable documents.
    • Measurement Unit - This unit of measure is the default when calculating the physical characteristics (measurements) of new units of measure. (Item masters that are marked Based on Measurement Unit must always have all measurements be exactly proportional across all units of measure.)
  8. When finished, select OK to save your item master changes.
