Creating bin transfers

A bin to bin transfer is the transfer of goods from one storage location to another.

In SmartTurn, when you need to move inventory items within a warehouse, you first create a list of goods to move. You can create the list by hand, adding one inventory item at a time. You can also create the list by starting from an inventory report, and selecting the item from the inventory report.

To create a bin transfer:

  1. To create a bin transfer document and then create the list of goods to move:
    • From Inventory>Bin Transfers, select Add item buttonAdd from above. Continue with step 3.
  2. To create a bin transfer document with an existing item in the list of goods to move, there are several options:
    • From Reports>Inventory by Item, Inventory by Serial #, or Inventory w/o Lic #: Highlight the inventory item, then select Bin Xfer iconBin Transfer from above.
    • From Reports>Quantity by Item, Inventory Stockout, or Available to Promise: Double-click the Item # you want to transfer. On the Item Master Inventory screen, under Inventory Items, highlight the item you want to transfer, then select Bin Xfer iconBin Transfer from above.
    • From Reports>Quantity by Location: Double-click the Location of the goods you want to transfer. On the View Location screen, under Inventory Items, highlight the item you want to transfer, then select Bin Xfer iconBin Transfer from above.
    • From Reports>Quantity by Owner: Double-click the Owner of the goods you want to transfer. On the Inventory Items by Owner screen, under Inventory Items, highlight the item you want to transfer, then select Bin Xfer iconBin Transfer from above.
    • From Reports>Quantity by Vendor: Double-click the Vendor of the goods you want to transfer. On the Inventory Items by Vendor screen, under Inventory Items, highlight the item you want to transfer, then select Bin Xfer iconBin Transfer from above.
    • From Reports>Quantity by Group: Double-click the Group of the goods you want to transfer. On the Inventory Items by Group screen, under Inventory Items, highlight the item you want to transfer, then select Bin Xfer iconBin Transfer from above.
  3. The Add Bin Transfer screen appears.
  4. In the top of the page, for Transaction Date, the system automatically selects the current date as the date of record for the transfer. If the date is different, you can change it by clicking in the field and then selecting the calendar icon to the right.
  5. Under Transacted By, enter the user who will complete this transfer.
  6. If applicable, enter an active Owner. If you enter an Owner on the bin transfer, then all of the transfer items must have an Owner that is either not set or is set to the Owner on the transfer.
  7. Optionally, enter a Priority for the transfer.
  8. To build the list of items to transfer, under Transfer Items, click Add item buttonAdd Transfer Item from the toolbar.
    • An Item Search screen with a list of inventory items appears.
      • If an item has quantities assigned to multiple license numbers, the quantities assigned to each license number (and the quantity not assigned to a license number, if any) appear on separate lines.
      • Note that SmartTurn allows you to add allocated items to your bin transfer. However, if the items are already reserved for another transaction, you will not be able to perform the bin transfer until the other transaction has been completed.
    • Check the items you want to transfer. Select OK. The items you selected appear in the Transfer Items table.
  9. Enter the quantity to transfer in the Transfer qty column.
    • Note that you can only transfer a quantity in the unit in which the item was initially received. (If you need to change the unit of measure, you can edit the inventory item.)
    • If the item master is set to Serial Control: Unique, Closed Container, or Open Container, the Transfer qty must be equal to the Current qty. (This is because the Serial # must be unique in the warehouse; you cannot split the inventory item because then there will be two items with the same Serial #.)
  10. Under Location to, enter the location to which you want to transfer the item. (The Location to defaults to the item's Default Pick Location, as specified in the item master, but can be changed here if needed.)
    • If you are transferring several items, and you want to transfer two or more of the lines to the same location, you can check the box to the left of each of those lines and click Bin Xfer iconTransfer to same location. A Location finder screen appears. Locate and check on location, and click OK. The location you selected appears in the Location to field for all of the lines that you checked.
  11. Under Transfer reason, select the reason for the transfer.
  12. To remove an item from the Transfer Items table, check the box next to the item and click Delete iconDelete Transfer Item from the toolbar. (All the items you select must be on this page. You can repeat these steps on each page of the bin transfer if you have several pages of items.)
  13. When finished, select Transfer to transfer right away, Save or Save & Continue Editing to save the bin transfer, or Perform Soft Allocation to reserve the inventory.
    • Selecting Transfer immediately moves the items to the Transfer to location, and changes the status of the bin transfer to Closed. The bin transfer is no longer editable. It appears on the list at Inventory>Bin Transfers. The individual transfer items appear on the list at Inventory>Bin Transfer Items List, each with a status of Closed.
    • Selecting Save or Save & Continue Editing changes the status of the bin transfer to Saved, but does not have any effects on inventory. The bin transfer is still editable. It appears on the list at Inventory>Bin Transfers. The individual transfer items appear on the list at Inventory>Bin Transfer Items List, each with a status of Saved.
    • Selecting Perform Soft Allocation reserves the inventory and prevents other warehouse operations from working with it. The bin transfer remains in status Saved and the bin transfer is still editable. The individual bin transfer items appear on the list at Inventory>Bin Transfer Items List, each with a status of Saved. The report for this inventory item (Reports>Inventory by Item>View) includes a Soft Allocations table that references this bin transfer.
